This portrait was awarded to Colonel John R. McKone as an inductee into the inaugural Hall of Fame class, 55th Wing, in 1999. On July 1st 1960, the RB-47 aircraft that Captain McKone and five others were in was shot down over international waters. He was rescued by a Soviet trawler along with Capt Freeman Olmstead and they were taken as captives to Lubyanak prison until their release was negotiated on January 5th, 1961. Both were later awarded the Silver Star by President Kennedy. Unfortunately the rest of the crew members perished when the aircraft was attacked.
