OPERATION DEEP FREEZE is the longest and most continuous operation the U.S. Air Force conducts in support of Antarctic missions. The six months of summer with 24 hours of sunshine, is utilized to bring in supplies for the six months of darkness and extreme cold when no flights can arrive. In winter, the Scientific Station population is about 200 scientists; in the summer, about 1100 workers reside there. Penguins love to watch unloading operations and any other human activity they can access. They even enter open doors in buildings and wander down the halls, peering into offices.
