September 14, 1918 - Lt. Arthur Brooks in his Spad XIII, 20, is on a ground strafings mission with his 22nd Squadron pilots near the Mars-La-Tour sector flying from their field in Belrain, Frnace. They encounter no enemy aircraft but on their return, Lt. Brooks is separated from his squadron. He is attacked by 12 Fokker DVII's from Jagdstaffel 2 Boelcke. With the assistance of Lt. P. E. Hassinger, Brooks shoots down 2-Fokkers and with this encounter he is awarded the DSC Citation. Flying with Lt. Brooks in this painting are Lt. Jacques Swaab in 15, Lt. Robert Walsh in 25, and Lt. Howard Clapp in Spad 16. All returned safely from this mission. Lt. Brooks ended his service with 6 victories, Lt. Swaab with 10 victories, Lts. Walsh and Clapp ended their service with no victories before the end of the war.
