September 13, 1918 - Lt. Gaylord And Lt. Rath, 96th Day Bombardment Squadron, American Air Service, A.E.F. After bombing the roads from Chambley to Mars-La-Tour, thus interfering with the enemy's plan to reinforce their troops, Lt. B. J. Gaylord (Pilot) and Lt. H. G. Rath were the only ones to return to their airdrome. They reported how 15 enemy scouts fell on their flight and how they fought their way back to Allied lines. During the engagement, Lt. Rath shot down a German Fokker Triplane. They were both awarded the DSC for heroism for this action.
