A C-130E Was Making A Routine Approach To The Icy Runway Of Williams Field, McMurdo Station, Antarctica, When A Sudden Blizzard Completely Obscured The Airstrip. Improved Weather Conditions Never Materialized. Having Circled The Field For 4 1/2 Hours And With Fuel Depleted, Preparations Were Made For An Emergency Landing Under Total Whiteout Conditions. An Attempted Landing On The Regular Ice Runway Would Have Been Too Hazardous. After 5 Aborted Approaches, A Miraculously Safe Landing Was Made On The Foot Snow Of The Skiway. Aircraft And All 32 Passengers Were Safe. After Refueling, The Plane Resumed Its 2500-Mile Trip To Christ Church, New Zealand.
