Flying From Bergstrom Air Force Base In Austin, Texas, To Carswell Air Force Base In Fort Worth, Texas, One Bright Moonlit Night, I Was Taken With The Jewel-Like Quality Of The Small Towns Over Which We Were Flying. On That Same SAC Trip A Few Days Later, I Spent Part Of An Evening At The Officers Club In Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Tuscon, Discussing With Several B-47 Crew Members Their Impressions And Feeling Concerning Night Missions. About A Year And A Half Later At My Home In Larchmont, New York, On A Cold January Night With A Full Moon, I Drove Into The Driveway, Got Out Of My Car And Stopped To Look At The Moon. At That Instant A B-47 Was Making A Perfect Arc Around The Moon, And Another One Was Coming In On The Moon At 4 O'clock. The Contrails Were Perfect. "Night Mission For SAC" Had Its Inspiration From These Different Sources.
