B-24 Liberators, On August 1, 1943, Set Out To Destroy The Ploesti Oil Refineries In Rumania. The Strategy Of Crippling A Nations Ability To Wage War At Its Source Of War Supplies Proved To Be A Vaild One--Nonetheless, This Particular Group Of Bombers Paid A High Price, Losing 54 Aircraft Of 177 Dispatched.
Note: The mission, on Sunday, Aug. 1, 1943, was deemed a success, even though 54 of the 177 bombers that took part were lost, and 53 more were heavily damaged. The refineries output was greatly curtailed, and five Medals of Honor were awarded, the most for any single American military action.
