Andrew Courtney Campbell, a wealthy Chicago playboy, attended the University of Virginia for awhile, then went into professional dancing. Shortly after World War I began, he enlisted in the French Foreign Legion, from which he transferred into the Lafayette Escadrille. He soon gained a reputation as a brave, dare devil airman. On the occasions illustrated, he took off in his Nieuport 17 one morning on a personal flying spree. In a particularly tight loop, the lower left wing panel of the aircraft ripped off. Campbell landed safely! Instead of a reprimand, he received a citation from the French government, because the escapade revealed the source of a structural weakness in the aircraft's design that had caused several other pilots to crash to their deaths. Campbell was later killed when he took on four Albatrosses single handedly. His bravery is honored by a plaque in the chapel at the University of Virginia.
