This Is A P-39q at The Fighter Strip At Cape Torokina, Bougainville, 12 Dec 1943. Note Retractable Cartridge Chute For The O-50--Inch Machine Gun In Wing Gondolas. This Plane Was Probably Either With 80th Fighter Squadron Of The 8th Fighter Group Or The 41st Squadron Of The 35th FG. The Squadrons Of These Two Groups Provided The Port Moresby Fighter Defense, Rotating Between New Guinea And Australia.
