On May 1, 1942, The 8th Fighter Group's 36th Fighter Squadraon scrambled five Air Cobras from Seven-Mile Strip located near Port Moresby, New Guinea.
Lt. Don "Fibber" McGee realized that his fuel was nearing exhaustion. As he turned for home, he spotted Zeros over the airfield. McGee decided to attack. Using his superior altitude, he quickly dispatched one of the Japanese fighters. This victory was the first of 94 credited to the 36th FS during the course of WWII.
I have pictured the end of the fight with the Owen Stanley Mountains in the background.
