Cartoons represent one of the most enduring art forms ever employed to capture and record military history. Examples are abundant and range from the decorative art displayed on the shields carried by the ancient Roman and Greek foot soldiers to the pin-up art that decorated World War II bombers and fighters. Hollywood, and the Disney Studios is particular, devoted its talents to continue this tradition. It was only natural since a young Walt Disney had drawn caricatures on the ambulances he had driven during World War I. By the 1940's Mickey Mouse had become symbolic of American way of life, so it was logical that he (and his friends) wound up on squadron emblems.
