Description:
Painting depicts the 421st Tactical Fighter Squadron "Black Widows" during sortie activities in Egypt. The concept for the painting was generated by May, 1982 article in Airman Magazine commemorating the "spirit, teamwork, and innovation have guided the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, Hill Air Force Base, Utah, from its first flying mission over war-torn Europe during World War II to today's peace-protecting missions in many parts of the world." Initially, the wing flew B-17's. In recent years the wing has advanced to the F-16 Fighting Falcon. As the 388th was the first wing to receive and fly the sophisticated new fighter, "the unit's members have basically 'written the book' on F-16 fighter tactics, maintenance procedures, and training." The wing has served as a hub for training the initial F-16 pilots, both in the United States and in Foreign lands and in the ensuing years has brought about the "first successful multi-national use of the aircraft," deployments occurring in the United States, Egypt, Canada, Norway and Scotland.
