August 1985 marked the end of the Georgia Air National Guard?'s ?Glory Years? as the 116th Fighter Wing relinquished its F-15 Air Superiority Fighters, ending its nearly quarter century as a fighter unit. The 116th flew the F-100D Super Saber Tactical Fighter from 1973 to 1979. It flew F-105G Wild Weasel Defense Suppression Fighters from 1979 to 1982; the F-4D Phantom II Strike Fighter with Laser Guided Weapons from 1982 to 1986 when the 128th Fighter Squadron received its F-15 Eagles. After all those years at Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Georgia, the 116th Wing was to become a B-1bomber unit at Robbins AFB, Georgia. The painting was created at the request of the 116th Wing membership to commemorate its years in fighters.
