Description:
During An Alert Shift At Mcchord AFB, Tacoma, Washington, A Scramble Was Ordered To Locate An Unknown Object Somewhere South And East. This Painting Depicts The Acton At The Moment Of Identification (And Actual Rescue) Of The C-119. The C-119 Had Less Than 10 Minutes Of Fuel Left And Had Jammed Landing Gear, Hence One Foot Down. Radio Contact And Flying Instructions Had Somehow Become Fouled--The C-119 Was Receiving Landing Orders Intended For Another Lost Craft Coming In From Fairbanks Also Lost And In Trouble. The C-119 Was Intensified At A Point Se Of Mt. Olympus And About 60 Miles Over The Ocean And Was Brought In Safely.Incidentally, This Story, Done In 1955, Proves Something About The Fallibility Of Radar Per Se At That Time.
