This drawing depicts the first kill by a Wild Weasel aircraft on an enemy surface to air missile site. The misison took place on 22 December 1965, it was a ROLLING THUNDER strike against the rail yards at Yen Bai, about 75 miles NW of Hanoi on the Red River. Spruce Flight left Korat Air Base in Thailand at 0900 with Captain Al Lamb and Captain Jack Donovan in the lead Weasel (58-1226) followed by four F-105's. Once in the target area Lamb began picking up the enemy radar signals and in an effort to locate the site pulled up from 300 to 2500 feet. While at this height in a 75 Degree left bank he spotted the enemy radar van in the middle of a village. Both it and the missiles had be camouflaged so as to blend into the village. Lamb led the attack on the site followed by the four F-105's of Spruce Flight and succeeded in completely destroying the site. According to author Larry Davis, in the halls of the Pentagon toast were drank to the Weasels. Captain Lamb and Captain Donovan were given official credit for the first SAM site kill and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for the mission.
