Each year, scientists of the National Science Foundation spend the Antarctic winter bedded down, isolated at McMurdo base with extremely low temperatures and in total darkness. As the sun rises in the Antarctic Spring, (our Fall) there is a short window when the Air Force is able to resupply the base from New Zealand by landing on the frozen surface of McMurdo Sound. The Artist was privileged to participate in an Ice Mission to McMurdo from Christchurch with the C-141 on November 16, 1987. Landing on McMurdo Sound?'s ice in the short period before it begins to melt, our party included MGen Kellim, the MAC/DO, his Aide-de-Camp, MAC?s Command Chief, CMS Ray, the MAC Director of Public Affairs, Col Fuller and this artist. Gen Kellim?'s two stars may be seen in the cockpit window as our Inspection Party at the forward door became the ones being inspected.
