The artist identified the elements in this painting as follows: "This is a panoramic view of Sparrevohn, Alaska, one of our more remote radar warning stations which shows the complete isolation of the area. The radar is on top of the mountain; the base for personnel manning the station is at the foot of the mountain. No access to this station is possible except by air."
Sparrevohn Air Force Station is a closed United States Air Force General Surveillance Radar station. It is located 356 miles (573 km) southwest of Fairbanks, Alaska. The ground control intercept (GCI) station was closed on 1 November 1983, and was re-designated as a Long Range Radar (LRR) site as part of the Alaska Radar System. Today, it remains active as part of the Alaska NORAD Region under the jurisdiction of the 611th Air Support Group, Elmendorf AFB, Alaska.
