Technical Sergeant Forrest L. Vosler - the Medal of Honor has been awarded to this 21 year old radio operator-gunner from Livonia, New York. On a raid over Bremen, the tailgunner of his Fortress was wounded and Sergeant Vosler, although painfully wounded in the legs and chest, and blinded by shell fragments in both eyes, continued to operate the tail gun until the enemy planes had been driven off. He then repaired the radio by touch and sent out a distress signals. As the crew jettisoned all unnecessary equipment, he begged them to throw him out as useless and to lighten the plane by 175 pounds, which might enable them to reach friendly waters for ditching and give their attention to the wound tail gunner. When the ship ditched, Sergeant Vosler managed to get out on the wing by himself and held the woulded tail gunner until the dinghy could be readied. Sergeant Vosler has lost one eye, but the specialists in the United States saved the other.
