The artis explanation of his painting: the purpose...was to show in a painting the USAF and Japan working together in an Air Force activity. This situation lent itself perfectly. The Japanese Air Force personnel are working on airplanes given to Japan by the United States and trained by American mechanics. I flet the need for a big figure in the foreground who looked Japanese, and not American. This situation, to me, embodies the coordination between the two countries working together in a common cause. It also has a human touch, rather than just showing an American-built plane with Japanese markings.
