I was sent with other artists to try to find new subject matter to paint for the U.S. Air Force. In Colorado Springs, 1995, we were escorted all over the various Air Force installations and at the Air Force Academy airfield we were offered a photo session with a female instructor pilot. When she landed and taxied to her parking spot about ten photographers and some Air Force personnel assembled around her. Not knowing what this was about, apparently, she asked the ground crew with great curiosity (and maybe a little trepidation), "What's all the fuss about?" My painting indirectly answers that question. Women instructors go back to pre-World War II. The visual ambiguity of the painting is intentional to depict with the same clarity, the past with the present. I hope the viewer will do a double take and delve a bit deeper to the question, "What is all the fuss about"?
