The painting was inspired by the wonderful job the Air Force was doing in air-lifting the children of Berlin out of the city for vacations during the summer. The painting was meant to tell the mute story of the anticipation and excitement of one child's holiday as seen in her borrowed old suitcase with the Kinderlif Tag hanging from it and the string bag containing her childhood treasures--an orange, her favorite doll and a Donald Duck comic book, typical of children everywhere. In the background, are the C-47s, one of which soon will carry her out of the hot city to a wonderful holiday in the country, thanks to the Air Force and the crews who fly them on their own free time.
