Major L. G. Hawker VC, DSO. Major Hawker flew his last mission on November 23, 1916 with the No. 24 Squadron in a flight over the Somme. Flying his DH-2, No. 5946, early in the morning, his squadron spotted a formation of German fighters. Even though they were out-moded and out-gunned, the air battle raged over the battlefield until they were well over into German territory. A lone red Albatross fignter shot down Major Hawker, England's most celebrated Air Ace.The red Albatross fighter was flown by Manfred Von Richofen, the Red Baron, for his 11th Victory.
