For 78 days (February 18 To May 7, 1934) the Army Air Corps under Major General Benjamin Foulois took over the air mail routes in the worst February weather ever recorded. After a disastrous start with ten fatalities in the first three weeks, the weather improved and the Army did its job very efficiently. Shown in the painting is a Douglas B-7 preparing to take off in a blizzard on AM Route 4.
