Early on the morning of January 21, 1967, I flew out of Bein Hoa with Major Gapp, Det. #3-5th Air Commando's in a U-10 Helio Courier--we put down on a grass strip northeast outside the village of Xuan Los where we were met by 2 Arvin soldiers.. One a non-com who spoke a little english and a Private who spoke no English--we broke on to portable sony transitor tape recorder the Private recorded a message. We took off, found our target and dropped some 50 thousand leaflets and for an hour and half we proceeded to fly around and around playing and replaying the tape over a loudspeaker system--the tape tole the villages of an upcoming search and destroy mission and to take a leaflet and the women, children and old folks to designated area where they would be cared for. Some of the leaflets called upon the Viet Cong to give themselves up and they would be rehabilated and taken car of. I've never seen a war like this one before.
