Description:
This painting commemorates 50 years of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) weapons systems and airmen excellence in providing strategic deterrence for our nation and our allies. The painting depicts General Bernard Schriever, the father of ICBMs, along with our earliest generation of missile crew and maintainer (enlisted member wears the buck sergeant rank) in "whites" and a security forces member in the "silver" uniforms passing on the mission of strategic deterrence to our latest generation of airmen. The latest airmen are in teams to signify the "two person control" concept. Starting towards the bottom left, the painting includes the four ICBM familes: Atlas, Titan, Peacekeeper, and Minuteman. In addition from the top, the painting includes the mailed fist and lightening bolts in metal leaf (part of the ICBM heritage from Strategic Air Command), seven Peacekeeper re-entry vehicles traveling in from the top down through the elements in the painting, President Kennedy approving Minuteman ICBM construction, a construction site of a Minuteman, an airman standing on duty in winter weather on a launch facility, an officer crew member receiving the Blanchard Trophy on behalf of his wing in winning an Olympic Arena competition, a UH-1N helicopter providing security, "Looking Glass" EC-135 ICBM airborne launch command post, and the only officer and enlisted member team of the ICBM weapons system.
