This P-47D was one of the earliest to come over here. The increasing range and speed of these planes was something to marvel at and I well remember the sensation of hearing the strow on the wireless from the U.S. pilot, Lt. Col. Cass Hough, who flew (dove) faster than sound, at the incredible speed of 780 MPH, in one of these planes. The day when I met and shook hands with him was a red-letter day for me. So were the historic days when I saw, and made sketches of, these planes setting forth on their mission, and when first going to give cover and protection to the bombers.
