"The Edge" was commissioned in 1993 by Lockheed-Martin based on structural drawings provided by the company. It was to represent the aircraft until the actual production example appeared several years later. The F-22 Raptor was designed as a follow-on Air Superiority replacement for the F-15 Eagle. The F-22A combines a highly maneuverable airframe at both sub and supersonic speeds with Stealth Technologies allowing it to penetrate enemy airspace and achieve Air Superiority with a first-look-first-kill capability against multiple targets. To show both upper and lower aircraft surfaces, artist Keith Ferris here depicts a flight of two F-22 Air Superiority Fighters separating for mutual support as they prepare to enter combat.
