The Mojave Desert Has Been One Of My Favorite Travel Areas For Painting And Photography For Some Thirty Years. This Painting Was Made In The Spring Of 1961 At Saltdale, California, In The North End Of The Mojave Desert. Salt, Brought To This Salt Works From A Nearby Flat Basin Dry Lake, Is Shipped By Railroad Car To Los Angeles Harbor For Industrial Use. Saltdale Is Just Off Of Route 6 A Few Miles From China Lake Missile Shed And Other Air Force Activities. Hills In The Background Are The El Paso Range Honeycombed With Ore Mines. In The Summer This Is A Heat-Blistered Valley. Vegetation About The Salt Plant Is Greasewood, Creosote Bush Sage And Wolf Bush And Ten Feet High Yucca Plants That Put Out A Cream Colored Flower In Spring. The Salt Plant Appealed To Me Because The White Piles Of Salt Against The Corrugated Rusty Tin Buildings Make Good Contrast Of Textures And Colors.
