"In a sense", the artist wrote,"this is the story of West Berlin. Its link with the rest of the Western World is a perilous path, but its people go about their business doggedly, courageously." Templehof lies in the heart of West Berlin. The approach to it is a narrow path over the rooftops and between the buildings. At the end of the runway is a small cemetery. History is inscribed on the tombstones and standing among the old gravestones and carefully manicured plots is a row of stark, ugly radar towers looking almost like huge crosses. The citizens came with flowers and gardening tools to decorate the graves, ignoring the steady stream of landing planes just over their heads.
