When the Soviet Block closed off land routes to West Berlin, it was Airlift that saved the city. In a dramatic Cold War Test of resolve, British and American aircraft, like the C-54 Skymaster, kept the Berliners supplied. On a single day in mid April 1949, 398 flights brought a record-breaking 12,940 tons into the city. The next month the East ended the blockade.
